Because these presets work more or less backwards from what you might be used to (you apply them to the background instead of the text), here's the step-by-step instructions on how to apply the outer bevel presets, how to "clip" the text, and how to place it on a different color background. It's a bit labor intensive, but I think it's worth the effort.
PLEASE NOTE: These instructions apply to using Blade Pro from within Paint Shop Pro. If you're using another graphics program the steps will be different, but the basic concept still applies.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE: I assume you are already familiar with PSP. If not, there are several good tutorials available online.
Okay, for step 1 you need to open a new graphic with a white background. For this example make it 215x100.
For step 2, add the letter "a" using 48 pt Arial. I used red for the text, but pick a color you like. Do not deselect text.
For step 3, invert the selection so the marquee includes the background, but not the text. Now open Blade Pro and select a preset. For this example I'm using bimjo_outbevel_b_gum. Modify the bevel settings to your liking. The result should look something like this:
For step 4, crop the selection so that just the text with the outer bevel is in the graphic.
For step 5, use the magic wand selection tool to select the background. Invert the selection. Next pick Selections/Modify/Contract. I like to start with a value of 2, adjust as needed to get a clear edge. Do not deselect text.
For step 6, from the menu pick Selections/Modify/Feather. I usually use a setting one larger than the Contract setting, in this case I used 3. Do not deselect text.
Finally, for step 7, copy the selected text (Ctrl-C). Open a new graphic with the color background you need. I used white for this example. Make the new blank graphic active and paste your selected text into it using Ctrl-E. Crop the new graphic to the size you need and save it. If you plan a transparent background graphic, you should place the selected text into a new graphic with an appropriate colored background for your web site.
That's one advantage of using these outer bevel presets. If you save the graphic in PSP format after you apply the preset, it's very easy to move the graphic to a different color web page background and maintain a transparent background. If you start with a green background and change to blue you simply go back to the original file and paste your text onto the appropriate background color and save it with the new transparency data.
